The 12 day grapefruit diet was originally developed in the 1930's. As a fruit, the grapefruit is ideal for dieters as it has no fat, is high in fibre as well as being low in calories. Grapefruits carry benefits for your health and skin due to being high in vitamin C.

You may be asking how the 12 day grapefruit diet actually works.   Well, it’s really quite simple and straight forward.  You just need to eat half a grapefruit before every meal.  The enzyme contained in the grapefruit works to reduce your appetite so that you actually consume fewer calories.  The grapefruit also acts to increase the fat burning process thereby helping you shed off the unwanted pounds.  It is well known that by using more energy than you take in from the food you eat, you will lose weight.

There are some studies that have been done which suggest that you could lose up to ten pounds in less than two weeks and this is simply by introducing this change.  You will also be more successful with losing weight if you relook at the way you eat.  By cutting down on your portion sizes, eating half a grapefruit before eating smaller meals, say four or five smaller meals rather than eating three large meals. And don’t forget exercising!

Just eating grapefruit and cutting down your portion sizes is not enough, you need to start by changing your mindset, review all areas of your life.  It is completely pointless thinking that one simple change in your lifestyle is going to result in a big weight loss.  Overcome emotional eating - do you eat food because you are bored or upset?

Are you getting enough exercise daily?  Most people are not active enough. I mean, you don't suddenly have to turn into a fitness fanatic, just a little extra activity every day will help.  There are a million ways to add some activity to your sedentary lifestyle.  Start by walking, you could take the stairs instead of the lift; get off the metro one stop early, walk to the store – park that car (you will also be saving on fuel).

In the same way, you can make progress by implementing simple changes at mealtimes. Instead of frying your food which only adds unwanted extra calories, why not try grilling, baking or steaming.  Not only is this good for losing weight, you will be doing your heart a favour too.  Cut out the pre-packaged meals that add dollars to your food bill not mentioning the pounds to your waistline.  Use herbs and spices to flavor your meals rather than salt and prevent fluid retention.

Drinking plenty of water and eating more fruit and vegetables.  Fruit and vegetables are high in fiber, low in calories and very filling. Your skin will glow from all the extra vitamins and minerals you are consuming.

Eat protein but chose the leaner cuts of meat and forget about sausages and other processed foods for now.  Don't exclude all treats but go for quality rather than quantity. Stop eating when you are full and not when your plate is empty.

Don't mistake being thirsty for feeling hungry. And stop ingesting hidden calories via flavored waters, fizzy pop and perhaps the biggest culprit of all, alcohol.

You can shrink your waistline by using the 12 day grapefruit diet, its so easy and inexpensive, anyone can take up this diet at home.  Just half a grapefruit before every meal!
